Words: Bal En Blanc

In unison with the early arrival of spring, the 18th edition of Montreal's White Party Week will soon be upon us and subjecting Montreal to a barrage of festive events, running from Thursday to Monday, April 5 to 9. Clubs in the city will be at full boil in the days leading up to Easter weekend, while the lid risks being blown off with the staging of the main event (Bal en Blanc) on Sunday, April 8 at Palais des Congrès. From 9 p.m. until noon the following day, the roughly 15,000 participants expected will be able to dance without a break to the sound of the biggest names in electronic dance music. Another king-sized addition to an already royal lineup of international DJs, Britain's Jacques Lu Cont a.k.a. Les Rythmes Digitales has confirmed his presence at this 18th edition, which is promising to be a very special vintage. In addition to enjoying a successful career in his own name, Lu Cont is noted for his work as music director and one of the main remixers for singer Madonna for close to a decade (Confessions Tour, Re-Invention World Tour, Drowned World Tour…). And Bal en Blanc is also offering the North American premiere of the spectacular multimedia stage structure Fusion Cube created by the British entertainment giant Godskitchen.

A varied selection of related events is also on the menu for the 18th White Party Week. Beginning on Thursday, March 29, a number of clubs in different towns in the east of the country will throb to the sound of special guests, right up to the day after Bal en Blanc.

Bal en Blanc turns 18!

To celebrate its coming of age, Bal en Blanc is paying tribute to its roots with a selection of 15 DJs from 7 different countries covering multiple musical horizons. Once again, two immense rooms will be created out of the total surface area of Palais des Congrès. The following DJs will be performing in the Main Room, devoted to house and electro rhythms: Steve Angello (Sweden); Fedde Le Grand (Holland); Jacques Lu Cont (UK); Danny Tenaglia (U.S.); Arty (Russia – in a house set); Paskal & Vesselinov (Montreal); Kingdom (Montreal). The Tech Room meanwhile will pulsate to the trance beats of masters of the genre: Armin Van Buuren (Holland – 2:20 a.m.); Ferry Corsten (Holland – 5:00 a.m.); Markus Schulz (U.S. – 8:00 a.m.); Ben Gold (U.K. – 10:00 a.m. to noon); Jochen Miller (Holland – 1:00 a.m.); Beat Service (Estonia – 11:30 p.m.); Insomnia (Montreal – 9:00 p.m.); Omar El Gamal (Montreal – 10:30 p.m). The renowned singer Nadia Ali, one of the most popular dance music voices for close to a decade, will be serving up a live performance in each of the two rooms at Bal en Blanc (Tech Room – 2:00 a.m., Main Room – 5:00 a.m.). * Set times for the Main Room DJs will be confirmed shortly.

Finally, the Montreal event would not be the same without the enthusiasm of its participants, who each year contribute to creating its one-of-a-kind atmosphere, above all through the originality of their white clothing and costumes. This 18th edition will provide the opportunity for going all out in terms of dress, as the famous outfit competition will be back – offering numerous prizes – in association with the new media partner DJ Mag Canada.

Get into the rhythm with related events

For anyone wanting to stretch the legs before, during and after (!) Bal en Blanc itself, about ten related events are on offer to round off the programming for White Party Week. Beginning with White Zone, which is happening on Thursday, March 29 at Quebec City's legendary Dagobert Night Club, with the participation of DJs Gervais Sphinx and Kingdom. The action will then move to Ottawa, where Etienne Ozborne, King Louis and Jean-Charles Pelletier will be at the controls for the White Bunker night, taking place on Friday, March 30 at Club Sotto. On Saturday, March 31, the young Swedish DJ Alesso will open our ears to why he's a rising star of new house at Club la Mouche in Montreal.

At the official opening on Thursday, April 5, the Montreal public will get to kick up their heels to the sound of Morgan Page, an artist nominated at the recent Grammy Awards and one of the most prominent figures in American house. Page will perform at Club 1234, where he'll celebrate the launch of his new album, In the Air. Still on Thursday, April 5, the outstanding Montreal collective Monitor will perform in the venerable setting of Stereo, which exceptionally will open its doors starting at 10:00 p.m., while Israeli producer and DJ Yinon Yahel will be behind the turntables at Club Unity. And this busy evening will offer an additional option with the White Tropics event, during which Montrealers Simon Lawler, Kärl, Angélika and Sonnar & Ones will all be mixing at Bar Passeport. For all those who'd like to arrive at Bal en Blanc truly warmed up, the place not to miss is Club Muzique on St-Laurent Boulevard, where the new Swedish prodigy AN21 (brother of Steve Angello) will demonstrate what he's made of. Lastly, diehards will be able to wind up this assault course by following the Bal to Urgence Dayclub in Laval, where DJs Martin Villeneuve, Uppercut and Alex Draym will officiate from 10:00 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Monday, April 9.
