Words: Igloofest

The fifth edition of Igloofest on the Quays came to a close this past Saturday under the acclaim of a delirious crowd who turned out for one last night in huge numbers, flirting with the absolute record of attendance for the festival. Throughout the three weekends (9 nights) of this historic edition, nearly 59,000 visitors came to dance and brave the cold during beautiful winter evenings alongside over 50 artists, local and international, who explored the rich spectrum of the electronic music world. In addition, a dozen visual creators from Montreal delivered breathtaking visual backdrops, giving every evening its unique aesthetic.

Musical programming : variety, distinguished guests, and numerous premieres

As an electronic music festival, Igloofest prides itself in offering a musical variety that satisfies seasoned listeners as well as first-time novices, serving a maximum amount of flavors from this ever-changing musical world. Alongside the A-listers, some of which deserve their spot in the Hall of Fame (Stacey Pullen (US), Carl Craig (US), Stanton Warriors (UK), Andrew Weatherall (UK)), Igloofest is also proud to have hosted the Canadian premieres of Kollectiv Turmstrasse (DE), SBTRKT (UK), MiniCoolBoys (IT), dÉbruit (FR), and Terror Danjah (UK). Each night, the main stage reserved a spot for one, sometimes two, local artists (Mike Mind & Thomas Von Party, Green & Lateez, Night Trackin’ DJS, Lunice, Marc Rémillard, Panton, Akufen, Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts, Jordan Dare, Bowly, Poirier et Nathan Burns & Elio Krass). Local talent was also on the forefront during the immense success of one of our newest additions to the festival : The Virgin Mobile Igloo. This second stage offered a program composed exclusively of Montreal artists who gave their all to honor their hometown. The permanent line at the entrance of this musical dome testifies to the love Montrealers have for their local artists and confirms Igloofest’s natural growth and development.

Precious partnerships

Beyond the months of hard word and preparation from the devoted staff (upwards of 200 employees), it goes without saying that the success of Igloofest is in part due to its breathtaking location at the Jacques-Cartier quay. In collaboration with the Quais du Vieux-Port de Montréal, the idea of Igloofest was born five years ago already; a winning gamble that grows every year and celebrates this joyous partnership. Other factors which cannot be ignored are the incomparable technical assistance of Solotech the support of partners such as Bande à part (celebrating its tenth anniversary this year), the very first participation of V, and of course Sleeman, who enchanted every last one of our visitors with its magnificent Igloo Village.

In other news : Igloofest goes on the road

The 2011 Igloofest season is not officially over. For the first time in its history, the event leaves the Quais du Vieux-Port de Montréal for a little one-night escapade. This Saturday, February 5th at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau during Winterlude, Igloofest carries on the festivities and invites its festival-goers to continue this unforgettable 2011 season with one more evening The musical programming, developed in collaboration with the FOÉ (Festival de l’Outaouais Émergent), will satisfy all ages and warm up the atmosphere in the courtyard of the museum.
