PikniCubik 2011: totally innovative triple Piknic

Words: GlobalSound

This upcoming September 3rd, 4th, and 5th, Piknic enthusiasts will have the pleasure of rediscovering a place de l'Homme completely transformed for PikniCubik. In addition to celebrating electronic music (and dance!), this mini-festival will honor several different art forms. On the menu: outdoor movie screenings, a photo exhibit and live art (painting and silkscreen printing) to the soundtrack of an exceptional musical program of which a section will be entirely dedicated to children. Festival goers will also have the opportunity to revamp their wardrobe and music collection by swamping clothes and records. And last but not least, the chance to make a meaningful gesture by contributing in different ways to PikniCubik's initiatives to donate funds to Leucan. All of these fresh new features will make this packed three-day event a Piknic unlike any other throughout the season.

Cinema under the stars
Right at sundown, as the music will keep beating in full swing on the main stage, the grassy lawn of the 2nd stage will transform for the very first time into a Ciné-Piknic (pop corn included!) for two magical nights.

Saturday, September 3rd: The Wall (1982, Alan Parker)
Musical film illustrating in its entirety (including several exclusive pieces) the historical album The Wall by Pink Floyd, released in 1979. Considered a masterpiece of its genre, this film – almost entirely dialogue-free – leaves the musical genius of this mythical group at the forefront. To discover or rediscover!

Sunday, September 4th: DJ XL5'S Videophonic Zappin' Party
Montreal artist DJ XL5 (also General Director of the Fantasia festival) invites you to a nostalgic musical journey into the history of music promotion before the era of MTV and music videos. You will likely discover Soundies (1940s) and Scopitones (1960s), short musical films that were played by inserting a coin in a video jukebox. On the program: swing, rock, twist, gogo dancers, outdated hairstyles, French and Quebecois “yéyé” artists as well as American rock stars, pop icons, and other surprises! Watch the trailer.

A 3rd stage at Piknic: Poirier and Sweet Daddy Luv fall back into childhood!
Welcomed at Piknic since day one, children already know the family zone with its huge blow-up castle and mini-golf. For PikniCubik, two Montreal artists have taken the challenge to cook up a musical program exclusively tailored for the young ones. Installed in the STM's Funambus (a bus transformed into an exhibit space). Sweet Daddy Luv (September 3rd) and Poirier (September 4th and 5th) are already jumping with joy at the thought of inaugurating this 3rd stage set-up exclusively for this occasion.

From 2pm to 4pm everyday. Free entry for children under the age of 12.

PikniCubik and Leucan
Inspired by the invited artists from the label Planet Break (September 3rd) who have decided to donate their booking fees for the day to Leucan, PikniCubik is following the example and following suit. Part of the revenues from the sale of the photos exhibited, the live painting fresca created by the En Masse collective, and from each screen-printed t-shirt from Massiv'Art will go to this charity dedicated to children suffering from cancer.

Until D-day: One news item a day on our web site
PikniCubik is a genuine festival aimed at celebrating the diversity of artistic expression. It includes even more activities than the ones mentioned above. From now until September 3rd, one facet or activity of the event will be revealed in detail every morning on the Piknic website.

To know it all, click here or visit the http://piknicelectronik.com/ every day.
